5 big tech trends coming your way

Mind Reading

“As the adviser speaks to clients either in real time or on video, the software will read facial expression as they talk about their financial plan, and see if they're happy or sad, and recognize what is and isn't interesting,” Mr. Tishkevich said. “Anything that has a camera, including Google Glass, can be used to read emotion.”

For example: “Sightcorp's webcam eye-tracking software lets companies detect where product users' attention is focused in a controlled lab setting...

With Industry Events, Smaller is Better

Large conferences have their value, but I tend to enjoy a smaller event the most and I suspect many advisors feel the same way.

Finance Logix, for example, runs a small conference that is by invitation only. The financial planning software company brings together 80 to 100 clients and presenters, carefully mixing company executives, advisors and industry consultants and experts. The result is a forum, where, by the end, everyone gets to know everybody else and has a chance to learn from each other.

TECH TOOLS: Targeting Wage Earners

It's generally advisable to see a finished product, or at least a late beta version, before writing about a new software application. Yet occasionally a pending release is so intriguing it's too hard to wait. Retirement Income Optimizer from Finance Logix is such a product. RIO is still under development, but it seems different enough and interesting enough that it should be on everyone's radar screen.

One problem in the financial planning industry is that it has generally been more effective in guiding the accumulation phase of financial plans than the distribution phase. Another problem is that many people who desperately need advice are priced out of the market, since many firms are geared toward wealthier clients.

Getting referrals gets easier with Retire Logix, PlannerSearch hookup

Retire Logix, a slick retirement planning application for mobile devices I wrote about last year when it came out on the iPhone, is now going to link to the Financial Planning Association.

The FPA and Finance Logix, a division of Oltis Software LLC and the creator of Retire Logix, announced the partnership in a joint prepared statement.

As a result of that collaboration consumer/investor users that download the app (it is available for Android devices, the iPhone, and iPad) can now touch a button and be connected with the FPA PlannerSearch database, which has more than 6,000 member planners, all with the certified financial planner designation.
